There are about 130 000 registered organisations in Finland, which makes Finland a leading country as far as organisational activities are concerned. Many of the organisations contribute to the improvement of crises preparedness and thus support the work of the authorities. They also provide assistance to a foreign country when help is needed because of a war or a natural catastrophe, for example. In many cases representatives of an organisation are among the first on the scene.
The strength of the organisations is the knowledge they have of their field and the extensive network of trained voluntary persons. For many citizens, taking part in the activities of an organisation offers an excellent way to increase their knowhow and skills. The tasks include being on call in the first aid, taking part in a search and rescue operation and volunteering for psychosocial assistance or fire fighting.
